On the site of a former fertiliser factory in Ipswich, the proposals at Paper Mill Lane take their cue from retained industrial buildings on the site, which have a powerful and robust aesthetic. This language is continued into the landscape where it is combined with a series of new gardens and play spaces.
Following a capacity study, plans were drawn up to create a mixed-use legacy for the refurbished warehouses and provide a fitting public realm, including a new market square, food production areas and attenuation wetlands, which embraces the site’s industrial past within an ecologically driven landscape.
The scheme was praised for its ‘wow’ design, which respectfully incorporates the history of the deteriorating site, bringing it back to life, it includes:
- 172 new homes
- A new market square
- Restoration of Grade II Listed Buildings
